High Lodge

The cottage sits on a hill overlooking the sea and the Galloway hills in the distance, with not another house in sight. Inside the cottage, the sitting room has a real fire, great books, a chess table and a decanter of whisky. The view from its oriel window looks out over green fields and woods, across Rigg Bay to the Galloway hills.

The kitchen, with its modern, oil-fired Aga, keeps the whole house warm on even the coldest of days. The bathroom has a free-standing bath and a view of the orchard to the back of the cottage. A romantic double bedroom is tucked under the beams with skylights for stargazing. Access is via a loft ladder which requires some nimbleness so, for the less agile, there is also a large sofa bed in the sitting room.

The back door opens to a private garden with decking and outdoor furniture, a wood-fired pizza oven and an orchard full of apple trees.

High lodge is an off-grid cottage, but has normal 240V electricity supplied by solar panels and a bank of batteries. It also has a stand-by generator if needed. There is no television but has 4G Wifi. There is an outdoor swimming pool and all-weather tennis court for your use at the Stables courtyard, which is a 5-minute drive. It is a 5-minute walk from High Lodge through the fields to a safe, sandy beach at Rigg Bay and a 10-minute drive to Wigtown – Scotland’s National Book Town – with its second-hand bookshops and annual literary festival. High Lodge is also the perfect place to explore the wider Galloway landscape: coastal and hill walks, mountain-bike trails, sailing, sea-kayaking and wild swimming.
