Beaches

There are some beautiful beaches to explore around Galloway House Estate. On the doorstep is Rigg Bay. It has a beautiful sandy beach and is a wonderful place to swim. It is a place of historical interest as it was used as a test side for the Mulberry Harbours which were ultimately used for the D-Day landings in 1944.

The beach is accessed through the wonderful gardens of Galloway House which are well maintained by Galloway House Gardens Trust.

From Rigg Bay you can walk the coastal path to the remains of 12th century Cruggleton Castle. The route takes you along the shoreline and through Cruggleton Woods to the spectacular cliffs at Cruggleton Lodge.

A short drive away is St Medans, Monreith, which has two beautiful, sandy beaches on the edge of the eponymous golf course. Both beaches have great rocks to jump off and often have decent waves for boogie-boarding.

There are numerous smaller beaches and rocky coves nearby – mostly only accessed on foot. The Galloway Coastal Path is the best way to discover these hidden gems and you will almost certainly have them to yourself.
